Taking place over three days in Port Lincoln, South Australia, this iconic event brings together passionate anglers from across the country for a weekend of competitive sportfishing, camaraderie, and conservation.

From Humble Beginnings to National Icon

What started in 2006 as a friendly challenge between a handful of keen fishos has evolved into one of Australia’s most respected bluewater fishing tournaments. Now operated by the not-for-profit Port Lincoln Tuna Classic Inc., the event has grown significantly while staying true to its roots: fun, friendship, and a shared love of fishing.

But the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic is about more than competition–it’s about doing things the right way.

Conservation-Focused Competition

The tournament targets only one species: the mighty Southern Bluefin Tuna. Every fish caught is tagged and released, ensuring the fishery remains sustainable for future generations.

In 2020, the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic made history by becoming Australia’s first treble-free competition, removing treble hooks from the event to give each fish the best possible chance of survival post-release. This commitment to responsible fishing sets a benchmark for competitive angling across the country.

Inclusivity on the Water

The Port Lincoln Tuna Classic is also dedicated to making fishing more inclusive and welcoming. That means encouraging more women and kids to get on the water, and fostering a culture that’s safe, respectful, and open to everyone regardless of experience level.
